Get Ready for Summer Reading – Part Two
Last month, I listed some suggestions
for summer fiction reading. This month, I’ll do the
same for nonfiction.
Although these first recommendations have been out for a while,
they are still worthy of your consideration, if you haven’t
already read them. Eckhart Tolle’s two books –
The Power of Now and A New Earth –
continue to be popular. And, in light of the recent presidential
primary season coming to an end, I expect The Audacity
of Hope and Dreams from My Father, both by Barack
Obama, to continue to do well.
But there’s lot’s more to choose from.
Educating Alice: Adventures of a Curious Woman by
Alice Steinbach, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for the
Baltimore Sun and author of Without Reservations,
is a funny and tender book that combines learning, traveling
and writing.
I Feel Bad About My Neck (and Other Thoughts on Being
a Woman) by Nora Ephron, gives the reader a candid and
hilarious look at women getting older and having to deal with
the trials and tribulations of maintenance, menopause, empty
nests and more.
For a little heavier fare, you might want to try John Perkins’
The Secret History of the American Empire: The Truth About
Economic Hit Men, Jackals and How to Change the World.
Or, Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA by Tim
Weiner.
For you history buffs, recent releases include Fallen
Founder: The Life of Aaron Burr by Nancy Isenberg, and
Hitler’s Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII by
John Cornwell.
And if you just want to read one book for the whole summer,
the almost 700-page biography Einstein: His Life and Universe
by Walter Isaacson has just come out in paperback.
Happy reading for a happy summer!
