Writing Workshop with Handouts and Writing Exercises: You Too Can Edit Your Writing

Saturday, June 12, 2 pm: Join Toby Fesler Heathcotte, author of THE ALMA CHRONICLES, as she shows you self-editing techniques. Toby will present a checklist designed to make your editing lean and sharp. Learn what’s important and what’s not. She invites attendees to bring a few pages of their writings, perhaps the rough draft of an essay, short story, or novel first chapter.

Participants throughout Arizona find value in Toby's workshops and say: "…liked the hands-on practice," "speaker is knowledgable and gave great practical advice," "writing exercises and handouts were great," and "most professional."

Scottsdale's Kiki Swanson, author of FAMILY STORIES WITH HEART AND SOUL, wrote: "As the hostess for AZ Author events, I have participated in several workshops presented by Toby. She is a good teacher, with excellent handouts for ongoing help to writers in all genres. Don't miss this opportunity for experienced guidance."

A former high school and junior college instructor, Toby now serves as president of AZ Authors and can provide up-to-date information on the writing and publishing business as well as on techniques of writing.

In THE ALMA CHRONICLES, souls, bound together in a circle of love, passion, betrayal and murder, reincarnate lifetime after lifetime from the ancient Celtic world through twenty-first century America. Two of the books in the seres, THE COMET'S RETURN and LUKE'S COVENANT both contain scenes set in Sedona. Toby is also the author of the self-help book, OUT OF THE PSYCHIC CLOSET," and has been one of our more popular speakers.

The Well Red Coyote Presents…Another Night of Music

Featuring: Brandon Shepard

Friday, June 18, 6:30-8 pm: We’re thrilled to be presenting the Sedona debut of popular Arizona musician Brandon Shepard. Brandon is a new, modern country performer whose newest CD, LET’S GET DIRTY, is getting both national and local playtime, including on KVRD in Cottonwood. Brandon opens for National recording artists such as Mark Chesnutt, as well as sharing the stage with CMA artist Mark Wills and Hollywood Yates

An accomplished actor as well, he is a great musician, both solo and as frontman for his band, the Rodeo Ruckus Band. Though the music is country, the energy he puts out during his performances is like that of a rock concert. Brandon believes in making the audience as much a part of the show as the band is. Brandon wants every show to be a personal experience for each and every person watching.

Brandon is a great believer in giving back. A portion of the sale proceeds from his CD will be donated to the Humane Society of Sedona.

Writing Workshop: DNA of a Novel, With exercise & handouts.

Saturday, June 19, 2 pm: Using the most basic elements, Flagstaff author Shannon Baker, author of ASHES OF THE RED HEIFER, will show you how to craft a novel that readers won’t want to put down. Sagging middles are as bad for books as for beauty and Shannon will show how to keep the plot as lean as Michael Phelps without the munchies. Bring a scene from your current work in progress or we can make up something as a group.

The biggest obstacle for many new writers, is making the leap from story premise to the actual writing. Nothing has stalled as many books as this challenge. Shannon will also share you how to begin with your story's basic bare bones, and to make your story come alive, by building scene upon scene.

ASHES OF THE RED HEIFER features an ancient prophecy. A terrible secret. A deadly conspiracy. Annie Grant, a strong-willed veterinarian is in Israel, just days from finding a cure for a deadly bovine disease threatening to cross into the human population with deadly affects. She can save millions of human lives and her professional success might help heal the rupture with her family when she walked away from the Nebraska ranch she loves. When her research is disrupted by a bomb, she and her lover are kidnapped by a fanatical Jewish group intent on forcing God's hand. Is Annie the chosen of God, destined to fulfill ancient Hebrew prophecy? Using her best friend as hostage, the group forces Annie to find the cure and engineer the birth of a perfect red heifer in Israel, making it possible for Jews to again find God's favor. Battling time and trapped in the bloody crossfire between rabid Zionists fighting to recapture Israel's glory, militant Muslims intent on stopping them and Christians anticipating rapture, Annie must choose. Her own life. Or an apocalyptic war. The future of the world. Or the ashes of the red heifer.

Shannon Baker has a right brain/left brain conflict. While the left brain focuses on her career as an accountant, her right brain concocts thrillers, including her 2010 release, ASHES OF THE RED HEIFER. A lover of mountains, plains, oceans and rivers, she can often be found traipsing around the great outdoors. Living for twenty years in the Nebraska Sandhills, where cattle outnumber people by more than 50:1, inspired the setting for this novel. After escaping from the wilds of Nebraska, she spent a few terrific years living on Colorado’s Front Range. Her next book, another thriller, is set in her new home of Flagstaff, AZ and involves man made snow on sacred peaks, uranium mining in the Grand Canyon, kachinas, murder, and a woman determined to make some sense of it all.
