Spirituality & Enlightenment Talk: Radical Surrender

Venue: The Well Red Coyote

Friday, June 6, 7 pm: At the heart of the teachings of such enlightened masters as Jesus, Buddha, Huang Po, Saint Francis, Nisargadatta Maharaj, Ramana Maharshi, and Dr. David Hawkins, to name but a few, is surrender; surrender to a higher Spiritual Power. After all the intellectual talk about the ego and whomever’s take on what that is, the bottom line is the same; Surrender!

Surrender is a simple and direct way of defusing the ego’s reactions or responses to our buttons. If we take it a step further and surrender the juice or payoff which the ego gets in its role as the perpetrator of suffering & sabotage, we are pulling bricks out of its seemingly impervious wall. Eventually if you pull out enough bricks…

So what is it that blocks us from such a deep level of surrender and how do we transcend it? How do we communicate with this higher power in such a profound and personal way that we can be willing to surrender all?

Join David Lowell, author of THE STRUGGLE TO SURRENDER: LOVE, CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE QUANTUM FILE, as he shares the discoveries which have transformed him and his life.

David Lowell has been working with energy and healing for 30 years and has maintained a professional practice for 17. He has helped many people change their paradigms and create new realities. His clients and students include people from all walks of life, as well as traditional and alternative healing professionals, on 5 continents, who wish to open themselves to higher levels of awareness and competence.

Nature Talk: The Grand Canyon Tassel-Eared Squirrel

Venue: The Well Red Coyote

Saturday, June 7, 2 pm: Join Flagstaff children's author Sylvester Allred, author of RASCAL, THE TASSEL-EARED SQUIRREL, as he shares the adventures of Rascal, a tassel-eared squirrel who lives in the ponderosa pine forest on the rim of the Grand Canyon. Rascal's tale reveals the lifeways of tassel-eared squirrels, the sometimes cruel randomness of nature, and the teeming and twittering life of a ponderosa pine forest. Sidebars discuss the many natural things that make up Rascal's world, and Diane Iverson's vivid illustrations jump off the pages, bringing Rascal's story to life. An elegantly crafted tale amidst beautiful illustrations, RASCAL, THE TASSEL-EARED SQUIRREL will thrill kids of all ages who are interested in the natural world of the Southwest.

Dr. Sylvester Allred received his Ph. D. in Biology from NAU in 1989. He joined the Department of Biological Sciences and has been teaching there for twenty-five years. Dr. Allred’s research involves the ecology and reproductive biology of the Abert squirrel that is a local resident of local ponderosa pine forests. His interests include writing, photography, backpacking, and road trips around the United States with his wife, Donna.

Though RASCAL is a book primarily meant for kids, Syl Allred is an engaging, dynamic speaker who makes the wildlife population of the Grand Canyon as fascinating to adults as it is to children.

Tony Redhouse Returns to The Well Red Coyote!

Venue: The Well Red Coyote

Friday, June 20, 7 pm: Come to Tony Redhouse's performance, and feel your heart and soul heal as you've never imagined they could.

In Native American tradition, ceremony is practiced to restore personal balance in our lives. When the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional aspects of our being are each healthy and united, we experience healing and wholeness. We can then live in a state of peaceful bliss and open our hearts to "Soar like an eagle" to our highest good. Tony Redhouse creates a personal ceremony, eloquently using the most ancient forms of human expression: the voice, the drum and flute, to guide you on a meditative journey around the Sacred Circle of your life.

Tony Redhouse, a member of the Navajo Nation, has served as a traditional Native American practitioner & consultant to Native American communities and behavioral health organizations. He is a visual artist, Grammy nominated recording artist, inspirational speaker, spiritual teacher, hoop and eagle dancer. He uses Native American art, dance and music to inspire and heal lives.

Tony's latest album is SOUL BLESSINGS. When you listen to SOUL BLESSINGS, you'll find your Soul Blessings with these rich layered rhythms, authentic yet soothing Native American chants, flute, guitar and fretless bass. Percussion sounds and bird whistles are from Tony's extensive collection of rare instruments.

Indigenous people have used music to communicate their deepest hopes and beliefs to each other, and to the forces in the universe. The most ancient and natural forms of musical expression were the voice, the drum and the flute. These timeless channels of healing and meditation can also summon us to reflect on our own personal season of life in his last album, JOURNEY TO THE FOUR WINDS. In the Circle of Life, Tony says, the Four winds can be guides for us to forgive our yesterdays, hope for a healthy today, see more clearly with our hearts, and to humbly share with others what we've learned.

Life Changing Talk: Seven Ways to See the World, Save the Planet, and Change Your Life

Book Launch Reception: 1:30 pm
Talk: 2 pm

Venue: The Well Red Coyote

Saturday, June 21, 2 pm
: Many in our modern society are in the midst of an existential crisis. Choices for what to do with one’s life are virtually limitless. So how do you find your life’s direction? Join Nancy Whitney-Reiter, author of UNPLUGGED: HOW TO DISCONNECT FROM THE RAT RACE, HAVE AN EXISTENTIAL CRISIS, AND FIND MEANING AND FULFILLMENT, who will address these issues in her talk, "Seven Ways to See the World, Save the Planet, and Change Your Life." Since this is also the debut of Nancy's new book, there will also be a reception prior to her talk to celebrate her new publication. Everyone is invited!

Nancy Whitney-Reiter survived the attacks of 9/11, left her job at a Fortune 500 company, and embarked on a year of international travel and soul searching. By giving herself time and space for self-reflection—unplugging—she was then able to build a new life based on vital interests.

UNPLUGGED discusses why we feel empty and how we try to fill the void, and then prescribes the unplugged cure. Nancy advises on how to decide where to go, pay for your adventure, and take care of your commitments. She offers a roadmap to the self-discovery process and advice on the transition back home. Success stories of those who have unplugged and a thorough guide to resources provide further guidance.

Paulo Coelho, international bestselling author of THE ALCHEMIST, says of UNPLUGGED: "A creative guide to discovering your dreams.”

Nancy Whitney-Reiter is the wife of local musician Greg Reiter.

  Southwest Authors Talk

Writing Workshop with Exercises: Plotting the Fast-Paced Thriller

Venue: The Well Red Coyote

Saturday, June 28, 2 pm: VOC writer Hugh Scott, author of SAIGON GOLD, will lead a dynamic workshop that covers techniques of building plot layers and subplots, turning points, high moments, and adding tension to every page. Working in small groups, participants will complete short practical exercises that polish their skills. Hugh will use parts of his own book, SAIGON GOLD, for illustrations.

SAIGON GOLD, Hugh's debut novel, is a mix of adventure, suspense, and modern Vietnamese history, in which powerful forces inexorably converge on collision courses. Protagonist Robert Anderson jumps at the chance to consult on a winery project in Vietnam. He has lived more than 30 years with memories he can’t reconcile—most notably an ambush in which he and only one man, a Vietnamese officer, survived. His long-ago friend lures him into a scheme to recover a boatload of gold bars that sank in the Saigon River and smuggle them to the United States. And when a mysterious agent turns up dead, Robert uncovers cryptic documents connecting him to that fateful ambush. And everybody he questions about the ambush ends up dead.

Hugh Scott has enjoyed a varied background as a newspaper reporter, career Army officer, and university instructor.

SAIGON GOLD has been banned in Vietnam.
