Writing Workshop:
Character
NOTE: THIS IS A RARE WEDNESDAY NIGHT PROGRAM
Wednesday, December 2, 7 pm: There's
an old saying that "character is destiny," meaning
that the person you are dictates how your life will unfold.
Some may debate whether the dictum applies in real life, but
there's little doubt of its importance in the world of fiction.
San Francisco author, Mark Coggins,
author of THE BIG WAKE-UP, makes
a return visit to The Well Red Coyote to present a workshop
on character. Mark will talk about the ways and means of revealing
character in your novels and some of the pitfalls to avoid,
such as telling instead of showing, and what writing instructor
Donna Levin calls the "Barney Fife Syndrome," in which
secondary characters threaten to upstage the main one.
Mark’s latest title, THE BIG WAKE-UP,
just received a coveted starred review from Publishers Weekly!
Here’s the review:
Coggins's outstanding fifth mystery to feature San Francisco
PI August Riordan successfully blends an over-the-top premise
with an unrelentingly grim plot. Soon after flirting with an
attractive young woman in a Laundromat, Riordan watches in horror
as an apparently deranged cable car operator guns her and an
older woman down at a cable car stop. Riordan pursues the killer
and stops his bloody rampage. The Argentine family of the first
victim, 23-year-old Araceli Rivero, hires him to investigate
an unrelated matter, the location of Araceli's dead aunt, whose
body was transferred from a Milan cemetery to somewhere in the
Bay Area. After quickly getting a promising lead, Riordan learns
that his clients have been less than straight with him—the
missing corpse is actually that of Evita Perón. Coggins
pulls no punches as the suspenseful action builds to a violent
act of vigilantism.

writer. |

The Well Red
Coyote Presents…Another Night of Music
Featuring: Vyktoria Pratt Keating
Thursday, December 10, 6:00 - 8:00 pm:
Take a break from the holiday hassles and come and party with
us. We’ll be serving wine and goodies, and we’ll
enjoy the music of Vyktoria Pratt Keating.
Vyktoria's music has been described as “Some of the most
free-handed, lithe and resilient music around” by The
Washington Post. Her exhilarating vocals and exquisite guitar
artistry provide the sonic backdrop to her intelligent, poetic
and often quirky lyrics, creating a new blend of progressive
folk, acoustic pop and Celtic rock.
The recipient of three WAMMIES (Washington DC Area Music Awards),
Vyktoria toured and drove 700,000 miles from 1990-2002 with
shows in 46 states. In 1999 she opened 42 shows for rock legends
Jethro Tull, and subsequently recorded her 4th CD with their
keyboardist, Andrew Giddings in England. In 2002 she won the
Southwest Songwriter Shootout and her first CD, "Blue Apples"
was nominated for a NAIRD (National Association of Indie Record
Distributors) award.
A compelling performer, her unearthly vocals and accomplished
guitar work produce a lush, ambient sound, and her incisive
wit, intelligent humor and skill for storytelling are an engaging
part of her live show.
Originally from Washington DC, Vyktoria has made her home in
the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, New Hampshire, Oxfordshire
UK, Pietown, New Mexico and has been a long time resident of
the Sedona/Verde Valley area. She performs music full time and
has released 6 Cds including a Celtic CD and a Christmas CD.
Her latest CD is THINGS THAT FALL FROM
THE SKY. |
